One area of our work where the need for specialist advice is brought home to us on an almost daily basis is VAT planning. In recognition of this at Burgis & Bullock we have a dedicated VAT manager within our tax team.
VAT work can involve simple compliance matters right through to the VAT consequences of very complex corporate transactions. We have found that there is no such thing as a ‘simple VAT question’.
Our VAT manager works closely with our clients because what may seem like a very simple issue can very quickly turn in to a horror story if not handled properly.
As with the rest of the tax team our VAT manager works very closely with the corporate teams, especially corporate finance, to ensure that VAT is not a secondary consideration when we our giving business advice. In many cases proactive VAT planning can often mean that deals have to be restructured with significant cost savings achieved.

- Cash flow planning
- VAT inspections
- Disputes with HM Revenue & Customs
- Property transactions
- Acquisitions, disposals, reorganisations and reconstructions
- International transactions and Customs Duty issues
Whilst direct tax may be complex there can be some logic to the approach. Unfortunately this cannot always be said of VAT where the conclusion may make no sense at all.
